Slayer's Jeff Hanneman died of liver disease. Band members have posted on their website that they've " just learned that the official cause of Jeff's death was alcohol related cirrhosis."
The group says their guitarist had a number of health problems in his final years, including necrotizing fasciitis, and neither he nor those close to him were "aware of the true extent of his liver condition until the last days of his life." They add that was not on the liver transplant list, and "by all accounts, it appeared that he had been improving -- he was excited and looking forward to working on a new record." Hanneman passed away last Thursday. He was 49.
Slayer is also making plans to honor Hanneman. They say they're organizing "a celebration of Jeff Hanneman's life," and are welcoming Jeff's friends, family, and fans to attend. Details are still being worked out, but Slayer wants to host the event later this month.
