Kurt Cobain Unplugged Guitar Sells For $6-Million

The guitar Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana’s iconic 1993 “MTV Unplugged” performance hit the auction block. The 1959 Martin D-18E is officially the most expensive guitar ever sold after being swiped up for a record $6-million over the weekend as part of Julien’s Auctions “Music Icons” lot.

Even before bidding had officially opened on Saturday, pre-auction bids on the late Nirvana legend’s guitar reached $1-million. The guitar got seven bids total, including Peter Freedman of Rode Microphone’s winning bid of $6-million-10-thousand. In a statement, Freedman reveals plans to display the guitar in a worldwide exhibition tour, with all proceeds going to the performing arts.

“Nirvana’s ‘Unplugged’ is one of my favorite records of all time and easily one of the best live performances ever captured on film,” he adds. “I immediately knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure it and use it as a vehicle to spotlight the struggles that those in the performing arts are facing and have always faced.”
