Governor Signs Bill Legalizing Marijuana in NM

And then there were 17...New Mexico is the latest state to legalize the use and sale of recreational marijuana. The bill signed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham yesterday also expunges the records of people with prior, low-level cannabis convictions.

The Governor has lobbied for legalization since she took office, and she called a special legislative session for lawmakers to vote on the bill after they failed to do so before the regular session expired. The signing means marijuana sales will become legal in the state no later than April 1st of 2022.

In the meantime, however, people will be allowed to grow their own pot for personal use within 90-days, and can have as much as two-ounces on them. As for those looking to celebrate their new freedom in public? That’s still a no-no – consumption is only allowed in private homes and licensed businesses.
