The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has placed the New Port Richey area under quarantine after a giant African land snail was found in the area.
While the “giant” snail is only up to eight inches, it poses an oversized threat. That’s because it carries the parasite rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis in humans.
