Elephant on the loose in Montana

There was quite a circus in Montana yesterday.

An elephant was seen roaming the streets after escaping from a Jordan World Circus event happening in the city of Butte.

Hours before the show was set to start, the 58-year-old elephant, Viola, had been receiving a bath from her handler outside the Civic Center when a nearby car backfired and spooked her. The elephant took off and made it a few hundred yards, strolling through a casino parking lot and a residential block. Viola's escape lasted about 10 minutes until the handler got to the elephant and guided her back toward the circus.

PETA released a statement saying Viola's escape "follows decades of abuse and involuntary servitude at the hands of Carson & Barnes Circus," which supplies the animals to Jordan World Circus. (New York Post)
