Alice Cooper Signs on to Play King Herod in NBC's 'Jesus Christ Superstar'

Rock and roll legend Alice Cooper has been cast in the role of King Herod for NBC's live production of Jesus Christ Superstar! coming this spring.

Cooper's dramatic and theatrical stage show has been wowing audiences for decades. NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt says the frontman is perfect for the role, noting the Herod character's "show-stopping musical number" in the rock opera.

"...[We] all look forward to the ‘King of Shock Rock’ taking on the King of Judea," Greenblatt told the Hollywood Reporter. "As the casting for Superstar ramps up, we can feel the excitement building for this brand new concert experience of what has long been considered the original rock musical."

Cooper is familiar with the role. He even recorded a version of "King Herod's Song" at the request of Jesus Christ Superstar! creators Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice in 2000 for the cast album release.

The NBC production of the show will be directed by five-time Tony nominee David Leveraux.
