Less Than Half Of Singles Think They’ll Find “The One”

Think you’ve found your soulmate? New research suggests not many feel they have yet and some are skeptical they will in the future. It turns out, less than half of single Americans believe they’ll ever meet “the one,” according to a new survey.

The poll of 2-thousand adults across the country, half who are single and half who are in relationships, reveals that only 41% of singles are confident they’ll find “the one.” But even some of those who are already coupled up have their doubts, as 20% of them don’t believe their current partner is their one true love.

  • Some have previously been wrong about their soulmate, as people have mistaken someone for “the one” twice before, on average. But a third admit they’ve had their hearts broken even more times than that.
  • Despite that, people aren’t giving up the search for love. About a quarter (26%) still believe there’s someone out there who’s truly right for them. Gen X is most likely to lean into that classic true-love mindset (28%), while Gen Z tends to have a more open-minded approach (19%).
  • Not everyone thinks “the one” has to be just one person, as one in eight believe you could have multiple soulmates over your lifetime.
  • When it comes to relationship styles, monogamy is still the preferred one for 47%, while Gen Z is more comfortable with open, flexible relationship structures (24%).
  • More than half of respondents feel like they’ve lost their “game” when it comes to dating, with 56% admitting they’re not sure they’ve still “got it.”
  • At this point, the average person says they haven’t had a good date in nearly a year and a half.
  • But people admit they have some “toxic” dating habits, including ignoring red flags because the chemistry is too good (16%), staying in a situationship just because the attention feels nice (14%) and overlooking incompatibility because they feel a spark (13%).
  • Those who’ve had successful relationships, even if they don’t last, credit taking things slow (28%), trusting their gut (22%) and being honest or vulnerable early on (22%) with making it work.⠀
