Foo Fighters bring Beaconsfield miner on stage for emotional Launceston reunion
One of the Beaconsfield miners, Brant Webb, had an emotional on-stage reunion with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl at a concert in Launceston, nearly 20 years after surviving a mining disaster. Webb and fellow miner Todd Russell were trapped underground for 14 days in 2006 and had requested an iPod loaded with Foo Fighters songs during their ordeal. Grohl played a special acoustic performance of a song he wrote for the miners at the concert, which Webb described as "pretty special." The miners' story had a profound impact on Grohl, who said it changed how he viewed songwriting. The emotional

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS: Producer Calls Kiedis "Tone-Deaf"
Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Michael Beinhorn said that singer Anthony Kiedis is “tone-deaf" during a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session. Beinhorn, who's also produced
Soundgarden, Hole and Ozzy Osbourne, got a series of questions in the grunge subreddit about his time working with the Peppers on 1987's The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and 1989's
Mother's Milk. One fan asked about "Knock Me Down" from Mother’s Milk, a tribute to the band’s late guitarist, Hillel Slovak who died from a heroin overdose in 1988. They said, "Why did John [Frusciante] sing in that song? I know originally it was him and Anthony singing lead vocals, but 'Knock Me Down' being a requiem for Hillel, why not only Anthony, the deceased’s best friend?” Beinhorn replied, "John sang the song (or rather, his voice was louder in the mix) because the song was melodic and Anthony was/is tone-deaf (i.e. - he can’t hear pitch). At any rate, John essentially wrote the song, including the melody, so it wasn’t entirely inappropriate for him to song it (plus he somewhat idolized Hillel)." Beinhorn added that he “never found out what they thought of the final mix" but that Kiedis “freaked out – not in a good way” when he played him “the tracks with the finished guitars on them for the first time." He concluded, “I think the band kind of disowned the record because of this."
Beinhorn's comments got reshared a lot, and he wrote on his Facebook page, "I did a Reddit AMA last week and casually mentioned that Anthony Kiedis is tone-deaf. This comment is now all over the internet and someone even wrote an article about it in VICE. Suddenly, I feel so important."

REO SPEEDWAGON: Might Still Be Together…
REO Speedwagon singer Kevin Cronin is Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan's latest guest on his podcast, The Magnificent Others, which you can watch on YouTube. One of the topics discussed was Cronin's decision to change bass players in REO, which led to them no longer touring. He said a shift occurred during and just after the pandemic. “I started kind of reassessing some things, and I was wanting a little more. Not necessarily outside the band, I wanted to lift the band in some way. So when the band got back together after the pandemic, I was psyched. And some of the guys in the band shared that excitement and some of the guys
didn't. So, it became a little bit of a chasm opening within the band.” Then in the fall of 2023, while they were getting ready to do their Hi Infidelity residency in Las Vegas, bass player Bruce Hall injured his back. Instead of canceling the shows, Matt Bissonette, who was in Elton John's band, was available following Elton's retirement from touring that summer. "Matt came out and something happened in the band. I was trying to lift the band [and] now I felt the band lifting me, and suddenly there was this new energy. One of the guys in Elton's band told me, 'Matt Bissonette's the kind of guy where any band he's in, the band gets better.' So, it was just like unplanned. Life just sometimes happens. So that was kind of the scenario. I love Bruce and I think he might feel like I was out to get him. I've heard that from people, that there's a feeling there and it's just not the case at all. I hold no ill feelings toward him. It just became an impossible situation.”
As a result, Hall and retired band founder Neal Doughty, who, along with Cronin, owns the rights to the name, voted against him continuing under the REO banner unless Hall was part of the lineup. So while it's still the same members of REO minus Hall, Cronin now tours under his own name. His next shows are aboard the Rock Legends Cruise, which sets sail out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida on February 23rd.
JOHN MELLENCAMP: Feels So Good
John Mellencamp braved 10-degree weather Saturday afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana to help Indiana University's football team celebrate their National Championship win last Monday over the University of Miami, completing a 16-and-0 season. A longtime fan and supporter of the team, he took the stage at Memorial Stadium along with his bandleader and guitarist Andy York to say a few words and to perform "Hurts So Good," which is traditionally played just before the fourth quarter at IU's home games, as well as at the championship game in Miami.
In 1996, Mellencamp, who watches all the home games from a private smoking shack atop the stadium, donated $1.5 million toward constructing the John Mellencamp Pavilion, the primary indoor athletics training facility for the Hoosiers football team. The facility includes a full-size football field with turf and serves as the team’s indoor practice venue.
67M Year Old Triceratops Skull Named After Ozzy Osbourne
The owners of fossilized remains of a dinosaur skull are paying tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. The Triceratops skull, which is about 66-to-68-million-years-old, was named after the rock star. The Geoworld Paleontological Laboratory says the fossil "instantly evokes the gesture of the horns," which is a recognized symbol in rock culture and "in line with the mystical themes of the music of Black Sabbath." The Triceratops skull is set to go on public display at the Tucson [[ Too-sahn ]] Gem and Mineral show later this month.

SCORPIONS: Bassist From Classic Era is Dead
Former Scorpions bassist Francis Buchholz has died at age 71. His family revealed the news on Facebook Friday morning, writing that he "passed away yesterday after a private battle with cancer. He departed this world peacefully, surrounded by love. Our hearts are shattered. Throughout his fight with cancer, we stayed by his side, facing every challenge as a family - exactly the way he taught us." Francis Buchholz played with guitarist Uli Jon Roth in Dawn Road in the early 1970s, and both men joined the Scorpions following the departure of guitarist Michael Schenker. They made their debut on 1974's Fly To The Rainbow.
Buchholz joined just as Scorpions started breaking out across the world, and it's his bass playing heard on such classics as "The Zoo," "No One Like You," "Rock You Like a Hurricane," "Still Loving You" and "Wind of Change." Buchholz left the band after their tour for 1990's
Crazy World and later toured with both Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker. Friday morning the Scorpions posted on their social media, "His legacy with the band will live on forever, and we will always remember the many good times we have shared together. Our hearts go out to Hella, his family, and friends."

The joy for us is in the process, and that's what has kept us coming back to it after all these years. These six songs are simply two best friends doing what we love most: creating and recording music together. That's where it started, and that's where it still lives."
