Still not sure what to get for the dads in your life this Father’ Day? You only have days left to figure it out, but a new survey suggests the thing they want most won’t be hard to shop for at all. It turns out, nearly 60% of fathers just want to spend time with their kids.
According to the poll of 502 American fathers:
- For more than half of dads (56%), Father’s Day is the best when they get to spend it with their children or grandchildren.
- Enjoying a meal together at home is the second most popular activity for dads’ special holiday (44%), followed by going out to eat or drink (36%).
- Some dads just want to have control of the remote, with 25% saying they’d like to watch movies or TV of their choice on Father’s Day.
- A quarter also want to spend time with their own father or father figure.
- Other dads would prefer free time to spend however they want, like going out for an activity they enjoy (18%), spending time on their own (16%), or with friends (16%).
- And some just want to get some alone time with their romantic partner away from the kids (18%).
- But 16% admit they just want to do nothing this Father’s Day.
- Overall, 15% of dads say they don’t actually want any gifts at all this year.
- Preferences for presents vary a lot by age, with younger dads more likely to enjoy material gifts. About 40% of dads ages 18 to 34 would like to get clothing as a gift, compared to just 3% of dads over 65.
- Older dads tend to be more focused on connection than consumption, with half (51%) saying they’d appreciate a call or visit from their kids or grandkids most. Only 15% of dads between 18 and 34 and 12% of those ages 35 to 49 say the same.
- A quarter of dads over 65 say they don’t want any gifts at all for Father’s Day this year.
- For those who do, 28% would like something simple and heartfelt, like a card or something handmade.
- Another 20% would appreciate a gift card to a store they like, and other commonly requested gifts include their favorite alcohol, tools and gadgets.
