Sex changes as we age and so does the ideal time to do it. Of course, what gets one person going may not be enticing to another, but everyone wants to have a satisfying sex life and it turns out, there’s some science behind achieving it.
According to Mike Kocsis, a hormone health expert, the best time of day to have sex depends on how old you are. Here’s what he recommends for your sex life based on your age:
- In your 20s - This is when your hormones are at their most “robust” and your libido is higher, so you may want to get frisky when you rise and shine. Mike explains, “Biologically, your body is telling you to make babies (whether you want kids or not), so you might wake up raring to go – making morning the ideal time to get down and dirty.”
- In your 30s - Think of this as your era for embracing scheduled sex. According to the sexpert, the best time is whenever you have time, because small kids and job stress can get in the way at this stage of life. But Mike says the hormonal shifts happening to 30somethings can actually make your sex life “deeper and more emotionally satisfying.”
- In your 40s - Routines may change again during this decade and that means the return of spontaneity. Morning sex might make a comeback, but long lunch breaks are a good option as well, or any stolen moments you have with your partner. Menopause can affect hormones and arousal levels in your 40s, but you’re also more aware of what fulfilling sex means for you and you know how to ask for it.
- In your 50s - Sex at this stage of life is “less about frequency and more about sensuality,” according to Mike, who says “oxytocin becomes more important than ever for intimacy” throughout your 50s. Timing-wise, mornings and midday are ideal, when energy levels are high and desire may be, too.
- In your 60s and beyond - This is the time to prioritize pleasure and this hormone expert says the 60+ set can look forward to a new “phase of sexuality that’s richer and more intentional than ever.” And afternoons and early evenings are the sweet spot for sex and sensuality.
