New Mexico passes a law making college free for most state residents. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed a law that will waive tuition for any state resident attending any in-state public school or tribal college. The law expands an existing program that paid for community college and has helped more than 10-thousand students over the last couple of years..

Senate Bill 140, an expansion of the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship Act, has been making its way through the legislative process since 2019. The bill has the state picking up the tab for tuition for in-state students who are taking at least six credit hours and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. Backers of the bill say it’s a game-changer for the state. For one, college degree holders tend to make more money than their non-degree holding counterparts.

The bill is different from other states’ free college programs because it allows older students to take advantage of the free tuition. Plus, the low bar for credit hours means students can still work a full-time job. So if you’ve got kids or want to go back to school, it might be a time to consider a move to New Mexico.
