Andy Warhol's iconic painting of Marilyn Monroe sold for $195 million at a Christie’s charity auction Monday night. That set a record for the most expensive piece of American art ever sold.
Still, the 1964 silkscreen came in under the auction house's $200 million estimate. The identity of the winning bidder was not immediately revealed, according to Page Six.
The previous record was set by the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s untitled 1982 skull painting, which sold for $110.5 million dollars at a Sotheby’s auction in 2017.
