You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, and you could also pick higher chances of getting Alzheimer’s. A review of “dozens of published studies” has found that a protein called “tau” has been seen in excess in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. That protein is “associated with the body’s immune system.” In this new study, researchers at Western Sydney University in Australia have “hypothesized” that the build-up could partially be due to ‘viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens entering the brain through the nose and the olfactory system.” That brings us to “chronic nose-picking,” which they say can “introduce germs into the sensitive nasal cavity” which can cause “inflammation of the brain.” That, in turn, has been linked to “the onset of Alzheimer’s.” While there’s still no definitive cause determined for Alzheimer’s, it’s certainly another reason to give up the hobby of digging for gold in your nostrils.
