This Friday, “Joker: Foile a Deux” his theaters, and critics are lukewarm on it…with many walking away underwhelmed and confused. Currently on Rotten Tomatoes, critics are giving it a 60% fresh rating. Here’s some of what’s being said…
THE GOOD
- “Absolutely not what you expect it to be, but that’s not a bad thing…the story of a man who refuses to be anything but himself right till the very end, and that’s what makes this Joker sequel so deliciously subversive.” (Loud and Clear Reviews)
- “Achieves two remarkable things. It updates the movie musical, using the genre in an inspired way that shouldn’t frighten fans who don’t like them. It’s also that rare sequel that meets – if not surpasses – the quality of its predecessor.” (Metro)
- “Phoenix is seamless, picking up this maudlin character again as if it were only yesterday. It's a truly versatile, malleable performance.” (Radio Times)
THE BAD
- “The musical numbers are largely crutches for limp character development & a thin narrative. Too much dancing around a smoky club and not enough around lit fuses in this journey through the Great American Songbook.” (Midwest Film Journal)
- “There are flashes of genius but the film just never gets going. Too much singing, and clearly (Todd) Phillips isn't good with musicals or female characters. Lady Gaga is horribly underused but (Joaquin) Phoenix is brilliant once again. And the film is visually striking.” (Beyond the Trailer)
- “It is not that this version of the Joker is inherently wrong, but it is uninteresting. Please let us be done with this.” (Flicks)
